February SEL Theme:

Compassion is having care and concern for the misfortune and suffering of others. Self-Compassion is having care and concern for yourself.

Beginning Definition: Compassion is being kind and showing care and concern for others.

Why Compassion?  Compassion is empathy in action. Students who practice compassion use caring words, demonstrate caring actions and have stronger friendships. In addition, increasing students’ ability to show compassion helps create a caring and positive school community for all students.

Bring the SEL Theme of the Month to life at home!

  • Praise your student for compassionate behavior and reinforce with specific feedback (for example: I noticed how you helped your younger sibling clean up. That was a compassionate thing to do)

  • Read a book and discuss how characters demonstrated compassion towards others

  • Share each evening or each morning one kind or compassionate thing you did for someone or someone did for you. How did it make you feel?
